Positive Behavior Support

Discipline Policy

Every student, pre-school through adult, has the right to be educated in a safe, respectful and welcoming environment. Every educator has the right to teach in an atmosphere free from disruption and obstacles that impede learning. This will be achieved through the adoption and implementation of a consistent school-wide positive behavior support and discipline plan for every school in LAUSD.

LD7 PBS Team host 1st Best Practices Symposium

Michael Hopwood and the entire LD7 PBS team host a Best Practices Symposium, providing skill development around discipline policies and highlighting successful collaboration towards the establishment of  achievable goals in Local District 7. The daylong event seeks to raise positive behavior supports among African American students, decrease the use of out-of-school suspensions and expulsion, and ensure implementation of the School Wide Positive Behavior Support policy at all schools in Local District 7.

The Symposium provided attendees with proven strategies and tools to reduce problem behaviors, improve academics, help students toward a healthier life, and to improve teacher wellbeing with an emphasis on School Wide Positive Behavior Supports.

BACKGROUND: Last year, LAUSD Local District 7 partners at Community Asset Development Redefining Education (CADRE), Public Counsel, and Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. (MHAS) issued a report entitled Redefining Dignity in Our Schools: A Shadow Report on School Wide Positive Behavior Support Implementation in South Los Angeles, 2007-2010. It highlighted the need for meaningful parent participation, data-driven decision making, strong leadership, clear and consistent expectations, consistent school-side training, and a systems’ approach to transforming LAUSD schools.
